The Catch: You Have to Want This Much Control
Continue is not the easiest option for everyone. If you want a coding assistant that works brilliantly out of the box with minimal thought, some commercial tools feel smoother on day one. Continue asks a little more from you. Configuration is part of the experience, not a side quest.

At the same time, Continue now has pricing around its broader agent and team platform. Starter is listed at about $3 per million tokens on a pay-as-you-go basis. Team is roughly $20 per seat per month and includes credits plus centralized management. Company pricing is custom for bigger security and compliance needs.
That split is important. If you are using Continue like an open-source editor extension with your own providers, costs are mainly tied to whatever models you choose. If you want managed team features, shared private agents, and admin control, the paid plans become relevant. That is actually a sensible model. It keeps the core tool accessible while giving teams a path to structure.
Where Continue Wins Against Bigger Names
Continue wins on flexibility, privacy options, and the ability to avoid vendor lock-in. That is the big one. It also wins with developers who want AI to fit into real engineering systems rather than sit above them like a mysterious oracle.
Compared with Replit AI, Continue is much less about browser-first building and much more about fitting into an existing professional workflow. Compared with CodeWhisperer, it is less AWS-specific and more adaptable. Compared with Cody, it offers more model freedom, though Cody still has a stronger story for massive codebase context if you are already in the Sourcegraph ecosystem.
It also appeals to teams that care about local or self-hosted options. In a market full of “trust us” products, Continue gives technically serious users more levers to pull. That is not glamorous. It is valuable.
Who This Is Really For
Continue.dev is for developers who want an AI assistant they can shape, inspect, and swap parts on. It is for teams that care about governance without surrendering flexibility. It is for people who would rather spend a little time configuring the right system than accept a polished but rigid default.
I would recommend it especially to privacy-sensitive teams, open-source minded developers, and anyone already juggling multiple model providers. It also makes sense for organizations that are tired of rewriting internal guidance every time a vendor changes model availability, pricing, or limits. Continue gives those teams a more stable layer to build on.
I would be less quick to recommend it to absolute beginners who want the smoothest possible first-run experience. There is nothing especially hard about it, but it assumes a level of curiosity and technical comfort that some packaged tools try very hard to hide.
What I Like Most About It
The best thing about Continue is that it treats AI assistance as infrastructure, not decoration. That leads to a healthier mindset. Instead of asking whether one vendor is “the smartest,” you start asking which model is best for this task, what should stay local, and how the assistant should behave inside your team’s workflow. Those are better questions.
That does mean some polish is traded for flexibility. I think that is a fair trade. Not everyone will agree, but if you are the sort of developer who keeps dotfiles organized and actually reads changelogs, you will probably get along with Continue just fine.
Bottom Line
Continue.dev is one of the few AI coding tools that feels built for adults. By that I mean it assumes users may care about architecture, model choice, privacy, and workflow design instead of merely asking for another autocomplete box. That makes it less immediately slick than some rivals, but also much more interesting over time.
If you want a controlled, customizable assistant inside VS Code or JetBrains, Continue belongs near the top of the list. If you want a turnkey tool that hides complexity at all costs, there are easier options. Personally, I think Continue’s insistence on openness is a strength. It trusts developers to know what they want. Nice change, frankly.
