Beehiiv Review
Beehiiv has become the de facto platform for newsletter operators who want growth, monetization, and a built-in website without duct taping multiple tools together. In 2026 it’s firmly positioned between Substack’s simplicity and ConvertKit’s automation depth, leaning heavier into monetization and publishing than traditional ESPs. The question is whether its pricing jump from the Launch plan to Scale makes sense for your list size.
Pricing Overview
Launch is free for up to 2,500 subscribers. You get unlimited sends, custom domains, recommendation network, audience segmentation, API access (minus the Send API), link-in-bio tool, and the AI website designer. Monetization and advanced automation aren’t included.
Scale starts at $49/month ($43 annually) for 1,000 subscribers and scales with list size (e.g., $69 for 2,500, $89 for 5,000, $109 for 10,000). It unlocks paid subscriptions with 0% Beehiiv fees (Stripe still takes its cut), the ad network, Boosts (referral payouts), surveys, A/B testing, automation sequences, 3D analytics, referral program, and up to three teammates.
Max begins at $109/month ($96 annually) for 1,000 subscribers. It adds removal of Beehiiv branding, priority support, NewsletterXP course access, up to 10 publications, unlimited team members, audio newsletters, podcasts, RSS-to-send, storefronts for sponsors, beta program access, and the new web builder.
Enterprise is custom for lists over 100K, with SLAs and dedicated support.
What Beehiiv Does Well
Monetization is top notch. Beehiiv takes 0% of subscription revenue (unlike Substack’s 10%), operates its own ad network, and pays you for recommending other newsletters through Boosts. The platform makes it easy to spin up paid tiers and sponsor placements without juggling external tools.
Publishing and SEO features are strong. Newsletters become blog posts automatically, and the built-in site builder gives you a fast, indexable website. The editor is clean and built for text-first creators, and the new AI designer helps match your brand quickly.
Growth tooling is thoughtful: referrals, co-registration, recommendations, and native pop-ups help build lists faster than generic ESPs. Analytics (especially the 3D dashboard) provide a deeper look at engagement, cohort retention, and monetization.
Limitations
Native integrations are still limited. You can connect via API or Zapier, but out-of-the-box integrations lag behind ConvertKit or MailerLite. Automations are improving but still simpler than dedicated marketing automation suites.
The price jump from free to Scale is steep. Going from $0 to $49+ monthly, especially with small lists, can feel abrupt. Beehiiv is best value once you’re monetizing.
The editor isn’t a drag-and-drop builder — it’s focused on writing. If you need intricate layout control or heavy design, you’ll need custom HTML or a different tool.
Who Should Use Beehiiv
Beehiiv is ideal for newsletter-first businesses, media operators, and creators who plan to monetize via subscriptions, ads, or referrals. If you want newsletter + blog + monetization in one place, it’s the cleanest setup available.
It’s less ideal for businesses that rely heavily on evergreen email automations, e-commerce triggers, or deep CRM integrations. Those workflows are still better served by ConvertKit, Klaviyo, or ActiveCampaign.
Verdict
Beehiiv has matured into a serious publishing platform. The free plan lets you start quickly, the Scale plan turns on serious monetization, and the Max tier caters to media companies that need control and multiple publications. If newsletter revenue is a core pillar of your business, Beehiiv deserves a hard look. If email is just one channel among many, a traditional ESP may be more cost-efficient.
